Irrigation System Flooding in Kailua?

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

An irrigation system waters Palm trees and grass in a tropical setting. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Honolulu County.

Aloha! Kailua locals can benefit from finding leaks in your in-ground sprinkler or irrigation system. Our local team in Kailua offers these tips for finding leaks in your sprinkler system.

  • Find your main sprinkler system valve and shut it off
  • Once you shut off the sprinkler system valve, look at the low flow indicator on your water meter. If it keeps moving, the water leak is inside your home.
  • If the low flow indicator stops moving, the leak is in your main sprinkler system pipe
  • To check for visible irrigation system leaks, turn off your sprinkler system valve and wait at least two minutes. This allows the main sprinkler system pipe to refill with water.
  • Go to your controller and turn on the zone. Go to the zone you turned on and listen for water running.
  • Do you see water bubbling up from the ground? Are there any wet spots or pooling of water?
  • Look for broken sprinkler heads in the zone. If water is not hitting the target area or flowing out of the sprinkler heads, you will need to replace the sprinkler heads.
  • Repeat this process for each zone in your irrigation system
  • Call a certified irrigation contractor if you can't fix the problem by replacing the sprinkler heads

How Important Is Flood Preparation When You Live on an Island?

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Flood Island Flood

When you’re living on an island, it’s difficult to predict when a tidal wave could occur, impacting your home and livelihood. Perhaps, you have recently suffered some sort of flooding in your home.

It’s easy to pass off a little water, considering flooding is the most common natural disaster in the U.S. and its territories. However, you may not have know it claims more lives per year than hurricanes, tornadoes or lighting. Not to mention, flooding can impact anywhere from one home to an entire island.

There are actually several similarities among types of flooding and the causes behind them. The categories of flooding can be broken down into three types: flash floods, river floods and coastal floods.

3 Types of Natural Flooding

Flash floods occur when heavy rain passes or sits over an area and hinders the ground’s ability to contain all the moisture. Excess water runs off and takes garbage cans, cars and more with it.

River floods can happen when there’s too much water for a river’s banks to hold, the water spills over the sides and causes destruction.

Coastal floods happen in areas next to large bodies of water, such as islands. When a storm comes through, it can cause ocean or gulf levels to rise to flood levels.

4 Typical Reasons Behind Natural Flooding

Heavy rainfall. Heavy storms that sit and rest over an area for a long time can cause flash floods or river flooding. Urban areas are more at risk for rain floods, because there’s a lack of soil to soak up all the water.

Oceanic activity. Storm surges, hurricanes and rising tides can cause water levels to rise in waves, which can wreak havoc in coastal communities, such as Honolulu.

Dams and levees failing. The most notable example of this in recent history would be the disastrous levee breaks during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Levees and dams fail when cracks occur or excess pressure overtakes the dam’s ability to contain the surge of water behind it.

Snowmelts and ice dams. In other states where heavy snow and prolonged freezing temperatures are common, snow and ice can build up over several months. When they start to melt, it can cause flowing waters, which damage nearby communities. Ice dams or ice jams occurs when ice traveling downstream blocks the path, causing the banks to overflow.

Whether you have experienced coastal flooding or a flash flood, SERVPRO has the resources to assist your home or business in the reconstruction process. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your life.

Asbestos Testing

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

Asbestos abatement is the process of removing or mitigating the effects caused by asbestos. Asbestos has been used in literally thousands of construction materials on Oahu, commonly referred to as asbestos-containing materials.

Unfortunately, asbestos has been found to pose serious health conditions when its fibers become loose, or airborne. SERVPRO of Kailua is certified and licensed to perform asbestos testing, abatement and removal to ensure the safety of people in a home or building.

Call us at 808-744-2730 for a FREE Onsite Estimate.

4 Reasons to choose us...

  • 24/7 No Charge Inspection Fee. We will come out any time of day to inspect your home or business at no charge to you.
  • Family Owned. We're local to Honolulu and we've been in business for over 8 years.
  • Licensed, Bonded, and Insured. We are licensed, bonded, and insured to perform asbestos testing, removal, and cleaning locally in Hawaii.
  • 5 Star Google Rating. We have over 150 combined Google reviews between our Kailua and Central Honolulu locations.

Asbestos Testing

  • First, determine when your home, or building was constructed. Asbestos was banned by the US Government in 1978. Structures on Oahu may have used asbestos in the construction process through 1989. It's a good rule of thumb to have an asbestos abatement company test if you suspect asbestos.
  • Second, see if there are signs of disturbed asbestos materials. Look for warning signs of degrading construction materials. Worn-out and disintegrating pipes, walls, insulation, vinyl flooring and other materials. When asbestos is undisturbed and intact, it can often be kept in place with minimal risk of exposure. But when it starts to break down and the fibers are released in the air, it becomes toxic.
  • Third, call an asbestos testing or abatement company to have the materials tested. You can check for signs of asbestos on your own, but testing should be done by a certified professional using special equipment. If asbestos is present, hire a contractor to repair or remove the materials that contain it to ensure the safety of people using the building.

*Inspections should always be done if there are asbestos concerns.

Asbestos Removal

Removing asbestos-containing materials without testing beforehand is a more dangerous and intrusive. Once the asbestos is airborne, breathing the toxic material can cause scarring to the tissue of the lungs and even lead to cancer.

When you have a water damage to a home or structure, a demolition, or a renovation where asbestos is suspected - you must first have the materials tested to ensure safety.

Calling a licensed asbestos abatement contractor

Asbestos abatement contractors are trained and licensed in handling asbestos. You could collect the sample on your own, but you would still have to give the samples to an EPA-certified laboratory.

SERVPRO of Kailua is a licensed asbestos contractor located in Oahu. We can help you with asbestos testing, removal, and cleaning. We will ensure the safety of the people in your home or building.

Hoarding Fire in Kokokahi Home?

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

A pile of various broken metal items sits outside a home. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in Honolulu county.

Aloha! Hoarding is a serious condition that creates fire hazards. SERVPRO® of Kailua offers this information for Kokokahi locals about hoarding dangers fromThe National Fire Protection Association:

Hoarding Increases Fire Risks

  • Cooking is unsafe if flammable items are close to the stove or oven
  • Heating units may be too close to things that can burn. They might also be placed on unstable surfaces. If a heater tips over into a pile, it can cause a fire.
  • Electrical wiring may be old or worn from the weight of piles. Pests could chew on wires, and damaged wires can start fires.
  • Open flames from smoking materials or candles in a home with excess clutter are very dangerous
  • Blocked pathways and exits may hinder escape from a fire

Hoarding Impacts First Responders

  • Hoarding puts first responders in harm’s way
  • Firefighters cannot move swiftly through a home filled with clutter
  • Responders can be trapped in a house when exits are blocked. They can be injured by objects falling from piles.
  • The weight of the stored items, especially if water is added to put out a fire, can lead to building collapse
  • Fighting fires is very risky in a hoarding home. It is hard to enter the house to provide medical care, and the clutter impedes the search and rescue of people and pets.

Tips for Protecting Your Home From Heavy Rain in Kahuku?

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

An air conditioning unit sits in a window in a home. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Honolulu county.

Aloha! Do you know that inspecting your air conditioning unit for possible sources of water leaks should be part of your home’s routine maintenance plan in Kahuku? SERVPRO® of Kailua offers these helpful tips from the Institute of Business and Home Safety for protecting your home water intrusion from heavy rain:

Check wall air conditioners for leaks.

Internal Drain: If the air conditioning unit has an internal drain, make sure the pipe size is adequate, and water is running and flowing freely in order to handle a high volume of water.

Caulking of Air Conditioning Unit Sleeve: Look for any gaps, cracks, or other damage that indicates improper caulking around the edge of the sleeve to the exterior of the building. This increases vulnerability to water entry.

Orientation: Tilting the air conditioning unit sleeves slightly (two degrees) towards the exterior wall can significantly reduce the water’s entry.

Weather Stripping: Proper weather stripping between the air conditioning unit and the sleeve can reduce the water from entering.

Sewer Backup in Laie?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

A person is trying to plunge a clogged sink. We clean and restore sewer backups in Honolulu county.

Aloha! SERVPRO® of Kailua professionals have the training, equipment, and experience to clean and restore sewer backups in your Laie home or commercial business. Here is some information on preventing sewer backups in your sewer lateral and city main from the Insurance Information Institute:

Properly dispose of grease

Cooking oil should be poured into a heat-resistant container and disposed of properly after it cools off, not in the drain. Washing grease down the drain with hot water is unsatisfactory. As the grease cools off, it will solidify either in the drain, the property owner’s line, or in the main sewer causing the line to constrict and eventually clog.

Properly dispose of paper products

Paper towels, disposable (and cloth) diapers, hygienic wipes, and feminine products do not deteriorate quickly and can cause a great deal of trouble in the property owner’s lateral as well as in the city main.

Periodically cut tree roots

If you have continuing problems with tree roots in your lateral, you may have to regularly have the roots cut by a professional.

Replace your line with new plastic pipe

Plastic pipe will prevent tree roots from entering your line. It is recommended to replace your line and tap with new plastic pipe.

Install a backwater prevention valve to prevent sewer backflows

Aloha! Have you serviced your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system lately? SERVPRO® of Kailua professionals will inspect your system and recommend the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. Your HVAC system acts as the “lungs” of your home or commercial business. Many pollutants can live and be spread through your ventilation system. The  Environmental Protection Agency identifies the following contaminants and health concerns:

Typical pollutants of concern include:

  • Combustion byproducts such as carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and environmental tobacco smoke
  • Substances of natural origin such as radon, pet dander, and mold
  • Biological agents such as molds
  • Pesticides, lead, and asbestos

  • Various volatile organic compounds from a variety of products and materials

Effects on human health associated with indoor air pollutants include:

  • Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat
  • Headaches, dizziness, and fatigue
  • Respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cancer

Major Water Damage in Kailua?

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

A ceiling has caved in due to severe water damage from a leaking roof. We restore water damage in Honolulu county!

Aloha. SERVPRO® of Kailua is part of a national network of over 1700 franchises, and when emergency services are needed, we can mobilize resources as needed. This picture is from an emergency water restoration we did in Michigan. The roof had a leak that was not repaired, and the water continued to enter and saturate the roofing structure and ceilings until the ceilings collapsed under the weight of the water.

We tarped the roof to minimize secondary damage to the home’s interior rooms and cleaned up and removed the debris when we arrived. We extracted the water from the room and set up drying equipment. Once the room was completely dry, we repaired the roof and ceiling drywall and repainted it. Now you would never know there had been water damage!

“Frank and Allen were a pleasure to work with. They communicated well and got everything done promptly. They also worked with my insurance company, making that part of this experience easy. Would definitely recommend these guys.” Rodd Yano

“The pipes in my tenant’s bathroom burst around 2 am Friday morning, flooding the bathroom, hallway, and two bedrooms. I didn’t know what to do, and my plumber suggested SERVPRO, so I googled them and contacted them the same day at around 8 am. The guys came out within an hour to extract the water from my bathroom and carpeting, left big fans for three days, by Monday everything was dry, and I was told there was not going to be a mold problem. Then I worked with the Recon team led by Frank and Allen. Once I got my insurance squared away, my job was scheduled within two weeks and then completed in 4 days. I got new paint, flooring, vanity, carpet cleaning, and it all came out perfectly! The team was very responsive, friendly, and professional. I would recommend this company to anyone!” Joshua Kitano

Aloha. SERVPRO® of Kailua has been restoring flood and storm damage for Kailua locals for years. Are you prepared for a flash flood? The City of Honolulu offers some great tips for flash flood preparedness. Here are some flash flood safety tips from the City of Honolulu:

Be aware of National Weather Service flash flood bulletins:

  • Flash Flood Watch: Heavy rains may cause flash flooding in your area. If a Flash Flood Watch is issued, be prepared for heavy rains and flooding

What you need to know:

  • Learn the best routes to high ground where you live, work, play, and travel should you need to evacuate

Aloha. SERVPRO® of Kailua wants everyone in Laie to have a safe and spooky-fun Halloween this year. Here are some Halloween fire safety tips to make sure your little monsters have a fun and safe time:

  • When choosing a costume, stay away from long trailing fabric
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily
  • Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters
  • If you use a real candle, use extreme caution
  • Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit
  • When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter
  • Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways, and yards
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes
  • Tell children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them
  • Be sure children know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire. (Have them practice, stopping immediately, dropping to the ground, covering their face with hands, and rolling over and over to put the flames out.)

Storm-damaged Business in Kaneohe?

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

Sunrise in Kaneohe. We are trusted leaders in commercial restoration in Honolulu county.

Aloha. When a storm damages your business, fast action is key to minimizing the potential for further damage.  SERVPRO® of Kailua has a team of storm damage technicians on-call 24-hours a day, and we typically arrive onsite within four hours of your call for help. Rain and wind are two common forms of storm damage Kaneohe businesses may experience. Honolulu County gets around 192 days of rain each year, and rain can bring water intrusion issues with it. Here are some ways to prevent water intrusion:

  • Make sure water drains away from the building.Water is invasive and will find its way into a structure when water pools around the foundation. When the ground is saturated by rainwater, water may enter into the foundation wall through any cracks.
  • Caulk and seal windows
  • Inspect the roof for missing and aging shingles
  • Check rain gutters and drainage systems and remove any debris
  • Check downspouts and clear any clogs and make sure they are draining away from the structure
  • Check sprinkler systems to ensure the sprinklers are not spraying water onto the structure, and that water is not pooling around the structure’s foundation.

Wind-damaged Roof in Kailua?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

High winds are blowing over palm trees. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Honolulu county.

Aloha. Do you know that SERVPRO® of Kailua has a team of technicians on-call 24-hours a day to respond to storm damage emergencies? Storms can damage roofs, so it is a good idea to inspect your roof for damage after a storm. Here are some tips from State Farm Insurance for protecting your roof from wind damage:

  • Strong winds can cause shingles to peel off, especially if edge shingles are not well secured or the adhesive on their tabs has failed
    • A roofing professional can evaluate your roof, and if needed, additional roofing cement can be added under each tab to help keep the shingles attached during a high-wind event
  • The shingles should be attached to roof decking of solid 5/8-inch-thick plywood
  • The roof decking should be attached to the roof framing using eight diameter ring shank nails and a secondary water barrier created by installing self-adhering flashing tape over the joints in the roof deck
  • For greater resistance to wind uplift, apply a bead of construction adhesive along both sides of the intersection between the roof decking and the rafters or trusses. Your roofing professional can provide you with information about additional safeguards.

SERVPRO® of Kailua’s technicians are trained and certified in applied microbial remediation by the Institute for Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). We have mitigated and remediated mold damage for many Kaneohe homes over the years. Here is some information on mold from our website:

  • Mold spores thrive on moisture
  • Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water
  • Mold colonies may produce health effects
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Propane Grill Fire in Kailua?

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

A propane barbeque is shown. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Honolulu County!

Aloha! Did you know that July is the peak month for fires caused by grilling in the United States?  SERVPRO® of Kailua responds to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day and offers these propane grilling safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association  to keep you safe while grilling outdoors:

Propane Grills

·       Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year

·       Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose

·       A propane leak will release bubbles

If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill.

·       If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again

·       If the leak does not stop, call the fire department

·       If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.

If the flame goes out, turn off the grill and gas and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting it.

Water Insurance Coverage in Kailua?

7/5/2021 (Permalink)

Two people are reviewing an insurance policy on a laptop computer. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Honolulu County!

Aloha! Did you know that SERVPRO® of Kailua can help with the insurance process and paperwork when we restore water damage in Kailua? Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for making sure you have the right kind of insurance to cover water damage in your area:

Different types of water damage are insured by different types of policies.

Homeowners and renters insurance provides coverage for burst pipes, wind-driven rain, and various other causes of loss. Generally speaking, water that comes from the top down—such as rainfall and burst sprinklers—is covered by a standard homeowners policy.

Some policies cover sewer and drain backups, but many do not; however, you can purchase a sewer backup rider to your homeowner's or renters' coverage.

Typically, any water that comes from the bottom up is covered by a separate flood insurance policy, which can be purchased from the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and from some private insurers. If you live in a flood-prone area, learn more about appropriate coverage.

Summer Fire Safety Tips from SERVPRO of Kailua

6/21/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of a menacing flame on a black background Don't let a house fire interrupt your summer plans! Take these tips from SERVPRO of Kailua to have a safe summer.

Summer is a beautiful time in Kailua. The sun is out later, fewer rain clouds can be found and it just feels like life has a new freshness to it. It's hard to stay inside this time of year. The natural beauty lures us outside. Whether it is a graduation party, gender reveal, church function or large family reunions you have this summer, you are likely to find a grill that's barbecuing some steaks, kabobs or veggies to be smoking in the background. The backyard activity is a time-honored tradition but unfortunately comes with an increase in home fires. In fact, springtime sees more house fires than any other time of year. Here are some tips from SERVPRO of Central Honolulu to have a fun and fire-safe summer.

The grill. Grills get the finger pointed at them first for spring home fires, but they’ve earned the stereotype. The combination of high heat and flammable materials, sometimes even an open flame, give fires and easy place to manifest. Make sure your grill is in good working order with no leaks or weaknesses in the structure, keep it away from anything flammable (including decking or siding), and clean it thoroughly when you’re finished. Almost 20% of grill fires are due to poor cleaning.

The fire pit. Backyard conversations around the fire pit are a regular occurrence during these months, but make sure you’re doing it safely. Have a bucket of water within arm’s reach to douse any dancing flames, and use it to slowly and safely put out the fire when you’re done. Embers should be cool to the touch before you go inside. Also, don’t use leaves or pine needles in your fire, because they create lots of tiny embers that can travel easily on the wind. Never leave fires unattended, and never leave children or pets by the fire alone.

Chimneys and dryer vents. It’s rare for homes in our area to have fireplaces, but if you do, take steps to care for it now. Instead of waiting until fall, clean your chimney out now that winter is over, and get rid of soot and ash buildup inside that creates a fire hazard. And clean your dryer’s vent pipe, ensuring no lint has caked inside—that stuff goes up in flames quickly.

Vegetation Maintenance Fire Prevention Tips

SERVPRO® of Kailua has been helping the residents of Kailua with their fire restoration needs for years. Our highly trained technicians have the advanced training, equipment, and experience to mitigate any size fire damage emergency you may have.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers helpful information on preparing your home for wildfires or brush fires. Here are some tips from the NFPA for vegetation management:

Home Ignition Zones

To increase your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire, choose fire-resistant building materials and limit the amount of flammable vegetation in the three home ignition zones. The zones include the Immediate Zone: (zero to five feet around the house), the Intermediate Zone (five to thirty feet), and the Extended Zone (thirty to one hundred feet).

Landscaping and Maintenance

To reduce ember ignitions and fire spread, trim branches that overhang the home, porch, and deck and prune branches of large trees up to six to ten feet (depending on their height) from the ground. Remove plants containing resins, oils, and waxes. Use crushed stone or gravel instead of flammable mulches in the Immediate Zone (zero to five feet around the house). Keep your landscape in good condition.

Sewage Spills Are Dangerous

Blackwater may also contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes.

Sewage backups happen for many reasons. Some examples are:

Toilet Overflow in Kailua?

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

Troubled Toilet in Kailua?

SERVPRO of Kailua responds to water damage emergencies often in Kailua, and we know that the faster the damage is mitigated, the lower the degree of water damage may be. According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) faulty supply lines, toilet flanges, fill valve assemblies, or toilet backups and overflows were attributed to 78 percent of water damage from toilets. Here are some loss prevention and maintenance tips from the IBHS:

Be patient after you flush and wait for the valve to completely finish refilling the tank and bowl.

If an overflow looks imminent, lift off the tank cover and lift the float to shut off water flow to the tank, and then turn off the supply valve.

Twice a year, inspect a toilet’s components, such as the fill, supply, flush valves, and the supply line. Make sure you can turn off the supply.

If you have older screw-type valves that are hard to turn or start leaking, consider replacing them with simpler ball valves that are easy to shut off quickly.

  • Never pour grease down the drain

What to do After a Kailua Storm hits your Home

4/24/2021 (Permalink)

When you think of storm damage, you typically think about power lines being knocked down, trees breaking and falling, debris spread across yards for miles, and power outages. What you might not think about is the damage the storms can cause to your vinyl siding and glass windows. If the winds are strong enough, they may blow debris and rain right through your window (or your sliding glass doors). This flying debris can be dangerous and could create a liability for both your family and your home. If this happens, you will be dealing with a major mess inside your Kailua area home and it can be difficult to clean up the destruction.

SERVPRO of Kailua is prepared to help you get your home back up and running as soon as possible. When disaster strikes, we can help. We are trained and ready to go during situations like this. Safety is the main priority, so please make sure you are wearing shoes around the broken glass and be careful if you choose to pick any of it up – even small pieces of glass can be very painful if they get stuck in a foot or a finger! Here at SERVPRO of Kailua, we can clean up the broken glass and any other debris that may be inside of your home as a result of the storm. We would love to make your home look normal again, “Like it never even happened.”

Flooded Bathroom in Kailua?

Sinking Feeling in Kailua?

I was down in my office for a couple of hours on a conference call before I heard a funny dripping and splashing sound coming down the stairs. When I investigated, I discovered that my daughter had left the sink running in my Kailua home. There was a shallow lake in the bathroom, and water was running down the hallway. The stairway carpeting was saturated. My neighbor told me to call SERVPRO of Kailua, and I’m glad I did.

I was amazed at how quickly the SERVPRO of Kailua technicians arrived. They quickly extracted the water and set up powerful air blowers and movers to dry the upstairs and downstairs areas that were flooded. Thanks to their fast mitigation, the floors were not warped or damaged, and there was no damage to the walls and baseboards. They documented the drying process and cleaned, sanitized, and deodorized the affected areas.

Ember fire prevention tips for Kailua

Our family loves to sit around the outdoor firepit in the evening. One night a gust of wind came and blew some of the embers up and onto the decking above us, and a fire broke out. It happened so quickly. Although the Kailua fire department responded quickly and extinguished the fire before it could spread to other parts of the house, there was still a lot of fire, smoke, soot, and water damage left from the firefighting efforts.

SERVPRO of Kailua responds to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day and we clean and restore all kinds of property damage. Research published by the National Fire Protection Association and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety reports that deck fires have a better chance of igniting when fuel sources are closer together.  Here are some tips for minimizing fire risk from windblown embers to decks:

  • Do not store items that can ignite underneath of a deck
  • Increase the gap between deck boards from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch
  • Increase joist spacing from 16 inches to 24 inches
  • Apply a foil-faced self-adhering flashing tape (foil-faced bitumen tape) on the top of each joist

Control Moisture to Help Stop Mold Growth in Kailua

4/19/2021 (Permalink)

Condensation and Mold in Kailua.

There are many different kinds of mold. EVERY SINGLE ONE needs moisture to grow.

Mold doesn’t need a storm or flood. Even a tiny bit of dampness is enough for mold.

Have you seen condensed water on the inside of a window? Have you noticed water droplets near the shower?  That water is more than enough for mold to start growing.

SERVPRO of Kailua wants you to know: if you control moisture, you control mold.

Control Moisture:

  • Clean spills or leaks quickly. Mold can start growing within 24 hours
  • Make sure roof gutters are in good shape
  • Don’t let water collect around the house foundation
  • Don’t let water collect in the air-conditioner drip pans
  • Keep drains clear
  • Indoor humidity should be under 40%
  • Wipe condensation from windows, pipes, or walls

SERVPRO of Kailua offers these suggestions:

  • Use exhaust fans
  • Use air conditioners and/or dehumidifiers. Low humidity reduces condensation
  • Use the bathroom fan when you shower
  • Appliances should vent to the outside. Even stoves, washers, and dryers produce water vapor

SERVPRO of Kailua has ideas on reducing condensation:

  • Increase air movement
    • Open doors & windows
    • Use fans
  • Insulate cold surfaces like water pipes
  • Keep  the temperature comfortable

Commercial lighting equipment safety information for Kailua

4/19/2021 (Permalink)

According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), one of the most common causes of commercial fires is electrical and lighting equipment. This type of fire is not easily predicted, as the lighting equipment can look totally fine on the outside in your Kailua area business. SERVPRO of Kailua wants to share the following information about commercial fires and how safety equipment helps to lessen the damage and can assist in preventing any bodily injury:

  • Wet pipe sprinklers installed in the ceilings of commercial buildings are very effective in helping to fight the fire(s)
  • Building sprinklers should be examined and tested every 5 years
  • There should always be a fire extinguisher in reach inside of a commercial building and they must be checked annually to ensure they are in working order
  •  If an office building is on fire, exit the building immediately and do not try to fight the fire yourself
  • If there is a lot of smoke inside the building, cover your mouth and nose and do your best to not inhale any of it

In the unfortunate event that a commercial building does catch fire, rest assured thatSERVPRO of Kailua is prepared to help clean up any fire damage the building/area has sustained.

Malfunction at the chocolate factory?

3/24/2021 (Permalink)

That's A Lot Of Mud Days of rain turned this house into the muddy mess.

No this is not a malfunction at Wily Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Heavy rains that flooded Oahu fell on the islands for days causing a messy mudslide streaming right through this Oahu home. The mud was a few inches deep in mud throughout the whole home. Luckily the residents had moved out prior to the flood. Had this home been occupied during this flood it would have certainly caused major damage to the occupying residents' personal belongings as well as to the structure.

After the intruding mud is extracted there is still work to do to get the home occupant ready. Mud is considered a highly contaminated substance, potentially carrying infections, bacteria, and microorganisms.  However SERVPRO of Kailua made quick work of extracting the mud and restoring the home back to livable conditions.

Mold can take over

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

Heavy Mold Growth Heavy mold growth occurred after a pipe leaked while this home was vacant.

SERVPRO specializes in remediation work of all kinds. This bathroom suffered from microbial growth that wicked almost four feet up the wall. With growth like this, it is required by the IICRC S520 standard to remove all affected materials. Our microbial growth specialists set up containment to keep any particles that may be aerosolized during the work contained in a small area to make clean up easier. They then removed the drywall, door casing, and door jamb and then treated the framing to seal in any spores that may have rooted in non-removable structure items. After all the affected material were removed, they cleaned up any remaining debris, then fogged the contained area to prevent spores from spreading any further.

The reconstruction division then stepped in and replaced the drywall, door jamb, and door casing then finished up with texture and paint to make it look "Like it never even happened."

On this drier side it is much easier for possible brush fires to occur. With this as an added influence on the likelihood of fires to occur it is not uncommon to hear about devastating fires and the damage done to local homes and businesses. To prevent such brush fires read the tips below!

How to Prevent Brush Fires

  1. Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  2. To burn trash, do so in a metal container. But only after you have cleared the surrounding area. Make sure you aren't near overhanging branches or bushes.
  3. Never leave a fire unattended.
  4. Never throw cigarette butts out your vehicle window.
  5. Install spark arresters on small engines and equipment.
  6. Weld only in a shop building or a cleared area.
  7. If your car has a catalytic converter, keep it off dry grass and away from brush.
  8. Report any suspicious or out of place persons or vehicles that you think might be maliciously starting fires.

What Storm Damage Will Your Insurance Cover for Your Kokokahi Home or Business

8/23/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding on Oahu Street Flooding damages in your home may not all be covered by your insurance. Take precautions and call your insurance to find out what damages they cover.

Take the Proper Steps to Know What Your Insurance Will Cover After a Storm

In the state of Hawaii, flooding is not uncommon. Due to our rainy season, November to March, taking up almost half a year flooding and storm damage is fairly common for local Kokokahi homes and businesses. Many residents of Hawaii find themselves stuck in financial hardship when covering the costs of flood damage. The steps many property owners forget to take are inquiring from your insurance company of their flooding coverage.

Most insurance companies do not cover flooding damage when the water runs into a home from outside. This means if any rushing or flooding water outside were to enter your home through a door, window, or crack the insurance will not cover the damages. Call and check with your insurance company to inquire what damages they will cover. In the case, your insurance will not cover these damages take comfort in knowing there are steps you can take to prevent your home from suffering from flood damages. Have your home prepared with sandbags, and a sump pump to prevent water from entering your home. Also, be sure to keep on maintenance in your home to prevent possible situations your insurance won’t cover.

Do not look past a small leak coming from your ceiling. Keep the maintenance of your home up-kept throughout the year. Insurance companies will decline to pay for storm damages if your home has had ongoing issues you did not take care of that cause damage to your home or business.

Check with your property and contact your insurance company to make certain you are prepared and aware of what needs to be done if your property is in danger of flooding.

If you have been hit by a storm call SERVPRO at (808)235-5015. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

Professional Water Damage Remediation Services In Pearl City Area

8/21/2019 (Permalink)

Wooden flooring bubbling up due to neglected water damage Water seeped into wooden flooring and caused the flooring to bubble and crack.

Do not push water damage aside in your Pearl City Home

Water Damage can and will worsen with neglect. Pushing water-related issues out of mind will not repair the damage and will drastically worsen with time. Do not wait! Sitting water will seep into walls, cabinets, and furniture causing the damage to worsen and pose new threats in supporting mold growth. Ensure any water damage does not worsen through neglect, take the needed steps to care for your home.

Per Say a refrigerator in your Pearl City kitchen was to have a “small” leak and a simple solution would be to place a towel on the ground to catch leaking water. Temporary or quick fixes may seem effective in taking care of seemingly small issues, but if the issue is not treated by professionals immediately, the issue will worsen over time and possibly result in greater damage, causing higher costs down the road. With repeated exposure to moisture, the risk of water damage and the potential of fungi growth increases. There is also the possibility the leak may worsen and the flooring or cabinets are then at significantly higher risk of bubbling or cracking due to the repeated exposure of water.

SERVPRO has a national reputation of being Faster to Any Size Disaster. We are timely to your disaster and efficient throughout the restoration of your property. With 24/7 availability you can call SERVPRO of Kailua any time of day!

Oahu Vacation Rentals are at Risk of Potential Water or Mold Damage

8/16/2019 (Permalink)

outdoor cabana Kahuku Vacation Rentals are at risk of potential fungi or water damage. SERVPRO is here to help.

Is your Kahuku Vacation Rental at risk?

With the new vacation rental laws being enforced August 1st, 2019 many illegal rentals are being shut down.

All vacation rentals have a constant flow of short term residents coming in and out. These homes are at risk as there are no long term residents to notice the possible mold growth or water damage of seemingly minimal pipe leaks.

As these new laws are enforced many vacation rentals will be needing a change in their targeted population, including possible long term rental changes.

In making these new changes SERVPRO recommends homeowners walk  through their homes and check for any fungi growth in common places such as:

  • Cabinets
  • Closets
  • Behind/Below Furniture
  • Small enclosed areas
  • Dark/Damp Rooms

Pipe leaks or seemingly minimal water damage can cause extensive issues and damage to your Kahuku rental. SERVPRO recommends homeowners walk through any vacation/long term rentals to check for possible water damage. Common places to check may include:

  • Walls
  • Bathrooms
  • Under sinks
  • Behind large appliances
  • Hoses
  • All faucets

If your rental has experienced any fungi/water damage call our SERVPRO team (808)-235-5015 today for an inspection.

Hurricane Season in Hawai'i: Protect Your Home

8/15/2019 (Permalink)

Hurricane Heading for Hawaii. In case of a hurricane or tropical storm prepare your home with year to year upkeep.

Protect Your Kailua Home Against Threats of a Storm

Hurricane season is June 1st- November 30th. With hurricanes and tropical storms being an almost annual threat, taking precaution to protect your Kailua home against storm damage is a necessity.

It is simple and easy to be prepared for storm season if your home is up-kept throughout the year. There are simple steps you can take to prevent damage to your home.

Year to Year Upkeep:

  • Repair Roofing
      1. Any damaged or missing shingles should be replaced! If a shingle is damaged it is likely to fly off in a storm and potentially cause new risks as a flying object or even lead to water damage within your home.If a shingle is missing that causes a gap for wind to rip out other shingles.
  • Repair Siding
      1. The rules for roofing almost exactly matches with repairing siding. Throughout the year, watch for any damaged siding and replace it to better ensure your homes safety.
  • Clean Your Gutters
      1. Keep your gutters clear and free flowing to allow water to flow in the proper direction. Make certain your downspouts flow away from your foundation.
  • Confirm Water Can Flow Away From Your Home
      1. Water damage to your foundation is detrimental for your home. Not to mention, expensive to repair. Make certain any water can  flow to a drain, ditch, or proper retention area.
  • Keep Your Sump Pump in Working Order
      1. If your home has a sump pump, needs one, or you’re looking into getting a back up, make sure it is in working condition. In keeping your sump pump in working order you will have extra comfort in a storm that your home will be safe from low level flooding.
  • Verify Proper Sealing of Doors and Windows
      1. Strong winds only needs a small opening to break, or enlarge an opening in your home, possibly causing greater damage in your home, such as windows, doors, siding to be torn from your home.
  • Keep Fence Posts Secure
      1. To ensure your fence posts do not become hazards in a storm, walk through your yard and check for any loose or wiggling fences. In strong or even tropical storm winds they may be ripped from your yard and become hazardous flying objects carried by winds.
  • Yard Upkeep
    1. Keep palm trees clean by cutting all dry, dead, or dangling palm fronds.
    2. Trim any other trees, bushes, or shrubbery to prevent breakage during high winds of a hurricane or tropical storm. These broken branches can become hazardous in the high winds of a storm.
    3. Keep your yard clean and clear of any loose objects that may become subject to high winds as they may become hazardous.

If you know a storm is coming Walk Through Your Yard. Check again for any objects that may become projectiles. This may include any yard furniture, pots, decorations, toys, or debris. In a storm these objects may be picked up by high winds and become flying hazards for you or your home.

If you have been hit by a storm call SERVPRO at (808)235-5015. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

How to Save Water Damaged Carpet

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

If the carpeting in your Kapolei home becomes flooded, contact SERVPRO professionals today.

Experiencing any kind of flooding can be devastating to homeowners or even overwhelming when thinking about repairs. If your Kapolei, HI home has been affected by flooding there are many questions to be asked when deciding to either replace the flooring or get it cleaned. Here is a guide of questions to ask in deciding the course of action.

  • How long was the room exposed to flood water?
  • Was the flood water contaminated?
  • Does everything, including the padding, need to be replaced?

Once these questions are answered contact a water damage restoration specialist to help expedite process and assess the flooding damages in your home.

Things to Know:

Time Exposed to Water

After 72 hours of exposure to water all flooring needs to be replaced. Once any material is exposed to water for over 72 hours the material may delaminate or begin microbial, fungi, growth. This includes even the padding below your carpet! Padding is thick and heavy, making it extremely difficult to clean and dry.

Contaminants

Though flooding caused by a pipe break within the home may be fairly clean, flooding coming inside from the outdoors carries many contaminants, including dirt, debris or even sewage. When determining how clean the water is consult a water damage specialist, who can establish the steps taken in either cleaning or replacing the flooring..

Saving Flooring

When possible and with careful consideration, flooring materials may be saved! In deciding with a water damage specialist to save your flooring, the carpeting is carefully rolled up and removed for cleaning and disinfecting. If needed the padding is then removed and thrown out and new padding is placed. Now the original flooring is ready to be placed.

No matter the water damage; whether it be a burst pipe,an overflowing bathtub or dishwasher clean up and restoration is always a necessity. To ensure a smooth and easy restoration of your home work together with your trained water professionals.

Did you say “Water Damage Categories”?

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage caused by flooding from dishwasher, classifying as a Category 2. Quick clean up! Quick recovery!

When addressing water damage there are 3 Categories recognized. As the category level rises so does the contamination.Clean water, or Category 1, is water from a broken pipe or a sink without any contaminants. Though category 1 may be harmless it can quickly become contaminated and change from a Category 1 to a Category 2 and pose new health hazards.

Category 2 water can come from a variety of sources:

  • Category 1 water left for over 72 hours
  • Leaking washing machines
  • Leaking dishwashers
  • Leaking toilet tanks
  • Broken aquariums or aquarium accessories
  • Standing water

Category 2 water damage doesn’t need to stand or age to become contaminated. Water from the appliances listed above are automatically Category 2.

Though Category 2 may not be as toxic as Category 3 water, there are many concerns or cautions to have when discussing Category 2 water damage.

  • Touching, Drinking, or any other contact may cause illness
  • Clean water can quickly and easily become Category 2
  • Category 2 water can become contaminated with disease-carrying residue, leading to classification of Category 3

Five Qualities to Look for In a Cleaning Service

5/12/2019 (Permalink)

Even when you make an effort to keep your home clean, there will be times where the workload may be too much. Travel, illness, or hosting large events may require some extra help. A professional service can help you focus on what is most important and not worry about cleaning. Here are five qualities to look for if you are thinking about hiring cleaning services.

1. Professionalism

Cleaning service employees should maintain a level of professionalism. Not all companies require their employees to wear a uniform, however, their appearance should be neat and clean. Employees should also carry a form of identification linking them to the service, as well as respect your home and your family.

2. Equipment

Always call ahead to verify if the service company will provide cleaning equipment such as sponges, brooms, mops, detergents, vacuum cleaner, and all other equipment necessary. If you prefer that the service providers use the products that you have, let them know ahead of time so there isn’t any confusion.

3. References

Search for testimonials online and look for references from previous clients. Try to look for clients who had needs similar to your own. Check for feedback such as turn-around time, effectiveness, and employee attitude.

4. Attention to Detail

Focus on details is what differentiates a professional cleaning service. A service where employees know to clean under the furniture, corners, baseboards, in between shelves, among others makes your house look and feel cleaner.

Daily House Cleaning v. Deep Cleaning Service

5/12/2019 (Permalink)

If your home is in need of change, you may be considering a professional cleaning service. However, you may wonder if that is something you can do yourself. Here is the room by room differences between general cleaning and deep cleaning to help you decide what is best for you.

Kitchen

The Kitchen is one of the places that accumulate most grime. While a general clean take care of surface dirt and dust, deep cleaning goes behind and inside everything for a more thorough wash.

When it comes to general cleaning, appliances such as the oven, fridge, microwave, and dishwasher, they will be wiped down and clean on top and outside. General cleaning will also include mopping, vacuuming, chair and table surface dusting and wipe down.

A deep cleaning will target inside and behind the appliances as well as all surfaces and knickknacks will be disinfected and shined.

Bathroom

To keep a bathroom looking and smelling fresh, deep cleaning it often is the best option. With general cleaning, shower stalls, tiles, toilet, vanity, and the sink will be cleaned and disinfected. A deep clean will give all areas more attention, cleaning more than just the surface, shower door and tiles will be scrubbed to prevent mildew growth, and any existing mildew will be chemically treated.

Living Room

Everything that is in plain sight will be cleaned in a general living room cleaning. All surfaces, mirrors, windowsills, and floors will be dusted, vacuumed and cleaned. Deep cleaning in a living room focuses on details such as the lamp shades, ceiling fans, carpet edges, vents, and blinds. It is important to have your home deep cleaned so you don’t have accumulated dust in areas that you can’t see since that can be detrimental to health.

Bedrooms

6 Steps to Take if Your Home Has Flooded

5/11/2019 (Permalink)

Take the proper steps when you deal with water damage!

When your home is flooded it is important to assess the damage and make your property safe once again. Knowing which steps to take and acting fast after a disaster is crucial in order to restore your home back to its original state. Below are six tips on what to do in case your home has flooded.

1. Contact the Local Authorities

If there is a risk the utility lines were damaged, or if there is sewer water in the flood, contact the right authorities before going back into the house, as those can affect health. Electronic components or gas leaks that are in contact with water can be very dangerous and must be handled by a licensed professional.

2. Turn Electricity and Water Off

If you are able to get to the main electrical panel and water valves, turn off your utilities. The first 24 hours are critical after a flood. This will protect your home once the emergency is over and power is restored.

3. Listen to Local Authorities

If your town is determined to be unsafe follow instructions posted by local leaders, make sure to listen for evacuation procedures, and do not return to your town, or home unless a professional team ensures it is safe.

4. Check your surroundings

When coming into a home with water damage, check for falling pieces such as an unstable floor, warped walls and beams, and loose roofing. Do not enter the property if you believe it could collapse.

5. Call your Insurance Company

Call your insurance company to clarify what kinds of damage the insurance will cover so you can take the right steps to repair the damages. You will be requested to send pictures of the flood, so take clear pictures and walkthrough videos before cleaning up, you may also choose to wait for an adjuster before cleaning up.

6. Hire a Water Damage Professional

The aftermath of a flood can be dangerous, call a professional water damage company to help restore your home back to its original state. The sooner water is removed, the less damage it will make. These teams will ensure the moisture is out of your home, and there won’t be mold growth, among other problems.

If your house has flooded call our SERVPRO team at (808)235- 5015. They specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for floods, fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

Mold and Mildew – Frequently Asked Questions

5/11/2019 (Permalink)

The Difference Between Mold and Mildew

Mold and Mildew are fungi commonly found in the moist areas of homes. Mold forms and spreads with invisible spores that travel through the air. Once a cluster of mold is formed, it becomes apparent typically as brown, gray, black, or even pink growth.

Mildew is simply a type of mold that spreads on flat surfaces, it is not as damaging to your home, or as harmful to breathe as other kinds of mold, but all mold should be addressed quickly to prevent spreading.

How Mold is Removed

Mold removal must begin with isolating the area since removing the mold disturbs spores and release them where they can be inhaled. The next steps are misting the area to keep the dust down, removing all damaged materials and placing them in sealed plastic bags.

After removing the affected materials, the area is cleaned and vacuumed with a HEPA vacuum to remove spores. Then, it is thoroughly dried out and the cause of moisture is repaired, such as improving air flow or fixing a leak.

How Mildew is Removed

Bleach can kill growth and even eliminate small amounts of mildew. If you see a small line of mildew start to form, bleach is a great solution. To eliminate mildew, you must act before it turns into mold.

Can I remove it myself?

You can bleach small amounts of mildew, but never attempt to remove mold on your own. A professional will clear and seal the area, so spores won’t affect the air quality of your home. The teams use specialized tools and equipment that households don’t possess. When it comes to your family’s health, don’t take any risks.

If your house has been affected by mold call our SERVPRO team at (808)235- 5015. They specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for mold, fire damage, floods, and storms. Call today for an inspection!

Seven Benefits of Having a Storm Door

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

Storm doors have benefits beyond added protection from storms.

If your front door is durable and sturdy, a storm door may seem unnecessary. However, there are more benefits to a storm door, such as added protection against intrusion and energy efficiency. Here are some advantages that will help you decide if a storm door is for you.

1. Noise Minimization

Noise travels the air through molecule vibrations. Recording studios use doubled doors that contain thick material to slow down the vibration of air, therefore reducing noise entry into a room. Similarly, storm doors introduce a noise reducing effect, turning your home into a quiet getaway.

2. Energy Efficiency

The first principle of insulation is that the seal of the barrier should have no gap, therefore not allowing temperature-regulated air to escape, and unregulated air to enter. A storm door can help improve insulation by adding barriers to your entryway, which is the most susceptible part of your home.

3. Security
Storm doors generally come with a bolt-and-padlock feature, advanced security vault locks or strengthen screens and reinforced fiberglass. These features add security to the home, compared to a regular door.

4. Style
The entrance door of your home is the first thing people see. If you are looking to make a good impression, storm doors can be crafted with elegance and according to your specifications using materials such as wood, plexiglass, aluminum, and PVC.

5. Affordability
Replacing any door in your home is not cheap. You will have to buy a prefabricated door, or the materials to make one and hire a professional contractor to install it. A beautifully designed storm door can be a better solution than simply replacing it with another regular door since it is more durable and reliable.

6. Ventilation
Storm doors are versatile and generally have screen and fiberglass windows, allowing to switch between them, to get air flow, or maintain indoor temperatures.

7. Value
Storm doors are durable and affordable. They can be made from wood, aluminum or other sturdy materials. They are made to last and can be a great investment because they will add value to your home if you decide to sell it in the future.

Storm doors provide various advantages such as safety and comfort. If you have been hit by a storm call our SERVPRO team at (808)235-5015. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

Tips to Ready Your Roof for a Storm

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

Prepare your home for future storms.

Often when the forecast predicts storms, homeowners are concerned about how their house will handle it. Heavy winds and rain can wreak havoc on roofs, but there are ways to prevent serious roof repairs. Follow the tips below to get a head start on preventing roof damage this storm season.

1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Even a light breeze can fill up your gutter and downspouts with debris and leaves over time. However, when a storm hits, it is almost certain that the materials that are in the gutter will clog it, making it hard to control the rainwater. The water will accumulate on your roof weighing down the structure and seeping into your home. This type of damage can require expensive flood restoration and roof repair services, which is why you should clean your gutters and downspouts regularly.

2. Trim branches Away from Home

Heavy wind is one of the many elements of a storm, trees often fall due to storms. Strong winds can break branches, and if those are close to your roof, you can end up with severe damage to your home. Make sure you have no branches hanging over your home, trim them back on a when they do.

3. Schedule Regular Roof Inspections

Being proactive is always a good idea, instead of waiting for problems to arise, schedule regular inspections from a professional roofing service. That will allow you to stay one step ahead of issues, so when a storm hits, you are prepared. Inspections identify the weak spots of your roof, such as leaks, structural weakness, and loose shingles, and professionals can fix them before the situation gets worse.

If you have been hit by a storm or want to be proactive, call our SERVPRO team on (808) 235- 5015. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

Assessing Roof Damage After a Storm

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

Roofs are not immune to storm damage.

1. Examine the Landscape

After the storm is over, take a walk around your house to look for damage. Heavy winds can cause branches to fall from trees, as well as it is common for homeowners to find roof shingles in the yard. If you find either, you can assume your roof has been damaged and requires further inspection.

2. Inspect the Exterior

If you don’t feel comfortable inspecting the top of your house, call a roofing company. However, a lot of damage can potentially be observed from a distance. Here are three common problems to look for:
- Curling, cracking or missing shingles
- Flashing on the chimney is loose or cracked
- Debris on your roof, such as tree branches
It is also smart to assess the gutter system if the gutters have standing water or are heavy (sagging), call a roofing company to repair them. If roofing problems aren’t addressed, the structure of the house may suffer.

3. Investigate the interior

In many cases, there is no apparent damage on the outside, however, compromised roofs may form leaks that allow water in the ceiling or attic area. If there are moist spots on the ceiling or wet marks on the walls, there is a leak on your roof. Leaks must be fixed promptly, preventing further damage to the structure of the home and the belongings inside.

If you have been hit by a storm or want to be proactive call our SERVPRO team on (808)235-5015. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

How Does a Fire Start?

5/7/2019 (Permalink)

Be mindful of heat, fuel, and oxidization.

Handling fire damage at your home can be a devastating task. To minimize the risk of disaster, there are preventative measures that can be taken to keep your household safe. Below is an overview of how fires start to help you better understand how to exercise caution in daily life.

Heat, Fuel, and Oxidization

Known as the fire triangle, heat, fuel, and oxidization are three elements that when combined, make a fire occur. In order to extinguish a fire, one of the elements must be taken away.

Heat

A fire cannot ignite or grow without heat. That’s why when fighting a fire, cooling agents are used, such as water or a chemical fire retardant, to diffuse the fire.

Fuel

In order for a fire to occur, there must also be a fuel source which allows combustion. The most common fuel sources are wood, chemicals, and fabric.

Oxidization

The last element is Oxygen, it is required for a fire to continue burning. That is why dirt and non-flammable blankets can be used to put out fires.

Stages of a Fire

A fire has four main stages:

  1. Ignition – It is when the fire is started. At this point, a fire extinguisher can contain it.
  2. Growth- Growth occurs when fuel is added to the fire.
  3. Fully developed- The fire becomes difficult to control.
  4. Burning out or Smothering- The fire either burns out or is smothered by another source.

What determines how bad the fire is depends on the stage it reaches. The damage is greater on fires that have gone past stage two.

Even when all the precautionary measures are taken, accidents still happen. If you have suffered from fire damage in your home, call our team at SERVPRO (808)235-5015. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

Do’s & Don’ts of Kitchen Fire Safety

5/7/2019 (Permalink)

Make sure you do not leave cooking food unattended.

Approximately 166,000 homes are damaged by cooking fires every year resulting in hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in damage. While homeowner’s insurance policies may cover fires that originated in the kitchen, there are measures that can be taken to prevent such fires from occurring. Below is a list of do’s and don’ts that will keep you and your family safe.

Have a Fire Extinguisher Nearby

A small fire extinguisher would be sufficient to keep a minor mistake from making major damage. It is a good idea to store one under your sink, and you must have it checked by a professional once a year. Having one could also possibly get you a discount on homeowners’ insurance.

Keep It Clean

Keeping your stove and oven clean is important because burnt food can ignite in high temperatures. Clean your stove, hood, and oven on a regular basis, and clean spills right away.

Do Not Attempt to Suppress a Grease Fire with Water

While throwing water on a fire is second nature, water will make grease fires worse because it will allow the fire to spread. Instead, put a lid on the pan to deprive the fire of oxygen. Other alternatives are to douse the flames with baking soda or use a fire extinguisher.

Do not Leave Cooking Food Unattended

Never leave the stove on when you are not in the room, it is crucial that you take action immediately after a fire breaks out, and you can’t do that if you are not there. If you must step out, have someone watch the food, or turn the burner off.

Even when all the precautionary measures are taken, accidents still happen. If you have suffered from fire damage in your home, call our team at SERVPRO (808)235-5015. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection!

Is It Safe Be in the Home After a Fire?

5/4/2019 (Permalink)

How does smoke affect the safety of your home?

The good news is the fire is over. But what’s next? You still need to deal with the aftermath, such as smoke damage. Smoke damage can be detrimental to the property, and to the health of individuals and must be addressed promptly. Here is what you need to know to effectively handle the situation.

What Are the Effects of Smoke on the House?

Even if the fire was controlled, smoke damage is still likely to spread to other areas of the home. It can permeate walls and air vents, as well as degrade the quality of air indoors. It can also decolorate walls and ceilings, soot and ash can be scattered on the floor. Smoke also has a strong odor and can linger in curtains, upholstery, and clothes in the house.

How Can Smoke Affect Health?

Inhaling smoke can cause a variety of issues. Breathing complications, skin irritation, and watery eyes are among those issues. The elderly and those with compromised immune systems tend to suffer the most. Since smoke, ashes, and soot contaminate the air inside the house, its side-effects can linger even after all visual damage is resolved.

Why Hire a Professional Restoration Service?

Removing smoke from the home is much more complex than it seems to be, making it a job for professionals. They will evaluate the condition of the affected areas, including areas where soot remains such as furniture and carpets. Their equipment allows them to safely treat, clean, and eliminate odors and restore the home to its previous state. Call (808) 235-5015 to your local restoration company.

Top 5 places mold thrives in the kitchen

5/4/2019 (Permalink)

Keep your kitchen clear from mold.

Mold grows mostly in warm, damp places making the kitchen one of its main victims. If mold is growing in your kitchen it can cause health effects. If you are worried about mold in your kitchen, you might need a mold remediation service to eliminate it from your home and keep it away. Below are five places to check, and tips to take into consideration so you can determine if it is time to get a professional mold remediation service.

Top Locations for Mold Growth in the Kitchen and How to Fix Them

1. Beneath the Sink

It is important to check this spot regularly since it is often the home of leaky pipes, damp sponges and washcloths, as well as other moisture issues. The secret is to wipe down all surfaces with a clean cloth and a ½ vinegar ½ water solution.

2. Cutting Boards

Cutting boards are the place where food residue is found, making it the ideal candidate for mold. At least once a week, soak both sides of the cutting board in white vinegar for 10 minutes then rinse and let it air dry.

3. Microwave and Stove

Nothing makes mold thrive like the grease and food spatter that are commonly found in those places. The best way is to keep the appliances clean by wiping them down with hot water and soap and drying thoroughly.

4. Garbage Disposal

Moisture and bacteria from decaying food make this a prime spot for mold growth. One of the secrets to keeping mold from spreading is simply using it regularly: at least once a day. Another option is to pour ice down the sink and let the disposal grind it, following the ice, pour a cup of white vinegar to kill remaining bacteria.

5. Refrigerator Drip Tray

Since the drip tray is usually not seen every day, a lot of people become unaware of the possible mold growth that is happening there. To avoid mold remove it every 3-4 months and scrub it with dish soap and bleach.

In your time of need call your local restoration company on (808) 235-5015. We will make it "Like it never even happened."

Suppressing Regular Fire vs. Grease Fire

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

Make sure that you are always prepared to handle a fire situation in your kitchen the right way.

Fire detection systems are great for identifying fires everywhere. However, in the kitchen, anything can happen. It is important to be able to tell apart regular fires from grease fires because they are controlled differently.

Here are some tips to keep you, and your family safe, and how fire suppression systems can be helpful:

Suppressing a Grease Fire:

Many people are inclined to believe that if there is a fire, you put it out with water; but when it comes to grease fires, water isn’t only ineffective, but it is dangerous since the vapor from water can cause the fire to spread and will actually worsen the situation!

The best way to suppress a grease fire is by using a Class B Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher. This equipment is the only capable to coat fuel with a layer of chemicals, preventing oxygenation.

Did you know?

Cooking oil reaches its smoking point at 450F, if you don’t act quickly a grease fire may take over your kitchen.

Suppressing a Regular Fire

Paper, rubber, wood, textiles, among others, are combustible materials that are commonly found in households. That means, these materials have an ignition temperature, if they reach such temperature, they can create a huge fire in less than a minute.

In order to prevent the fire from escalating, the best option is to have a foam extinguisher nearby, the foam will smooth the materials and cool them down.

Did you know?

Combustible fire is the most common type of fire. And NFPA stated that U.S. fire departments respond to an average of one home fire every 88 seconds.

Fires are unpredictable, it is a good idea to not only have fire detection systems in place but also fire suppression systems. Our team can meet your needs locally on Oahu! We offer restoration services in your time of need "Like it never even happened." Call us at (808) 235-5015.

Mold Growth in your Home

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Moldy wall in Kitchen Pantry

Indoor mold is a common concern in Hawaii as Hawaii's climate is a perfect environment for mold.  Over growth of indoor mold can occur for many reasons, the most typical setting we find an over growth of mold is in homes that have been unoccupied for a length of time.  The main reason for this is because of the lack of air movement in the home. When a home or business owner’s leave their property it is usually left lock up, window closed tight, and AC turned off. With our humid and moderate temperatures here in Hawaii a home without air movement can be a mold haven, a perfect place for it to grow undisturbed.

Mold is present in almost every environment, indoor and outdoor. It isn't of much concern until the spore count ie, how much mold is present, reaches an unhealthy level. This is when health issues can arise. Mold is not only a health concern but it can also cause rot to occur on the surface it is growing on. This can weaken framing or cabinetry and decay sheet rock and flooring.

If you find your home is in need of help due to an over growth of mold don't hesitate to call on SERVPRO of Kailua North/ Laie we are always here to help.

This consequently may cause potential damage to the unit below.  This can also lead to mold and bacteria growth.  In these cases be sure you know who to call right away to prevent further damage. Appliance Malfunction and Leaks are far more Common than we Think.

7/10/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage to Ceiling Caused by a Dishwasher Malfunction Upstairs.

Appliance malfunctions are one of the most common reasons water damage affects today’s homes. A slight breach in the gasket on a washer or a small leak in the pipes leading to an automatic ice maker can slowly damage the walls or the floors of your Kailua home in hidden areas. SERVPRO technicians receive training to locate and restore the many paths water takes to intrude and damage structures of your home.

Our crew locates the leak and arranges for repair and then gets to work on the damage done by the water. As we work through the areas saturated we look for mold growth, which is common when water leaks over time. If found, we add mold remediation to the agenda; our technicians are trained in the EPA mold abatement protocols.

SERVPRO crews extract any visible water and set up air movers and dehumidifiers to reduce moisture in the air and fixtures. We recommend you run your AC units as well to lower humidity. The team monitors moisture levels, and we remove our equipment only when the proper levels are attained.

SERVPRO Tip--Reduce Moisture and the Relative Humidity RH in Your Kaneohe Home to Help Prevent Mold Damage

SERVPRO Advises on Mold Prevention Tips and General Information

It is relatively common knowledge that mold and mildew growth are constant challenges to residents of the Islands. Our state enjoys almost daily rain and average humidity percentages ranging from the mid to high 60's to over 80. Consistently reported precipitation and tropical temperatures and humidity provide microbes plenty of moisture needed to flourish in Kaneohe. Our mold remediation teams share strategies to control these frequent fungal growth problems.

Plumbing and roof leaks also contribute to mold damage in Kaneohe. Regular and expert repair and maintenance improve your odds when taking proactive steps to limit mold spores’ access to moisture. Some homeowners feel discouraged when their vigilance in home maintenance and humidity control still does not rid their homes of mold issues. We encourage frustrated residents living in this sheltered cove of Kaneohe Bay to discuss other possibilities underlying a persistent mold problem with our experts.

Some of the places molds can hide and grow are not where a homeowner might think to look. Because most Hawaiian homes rest on a slab foundation or post and pier construction, any water that overflows from appliances or mechanical systems located on the lowest level of a dwelling can pool if not drained properly. A washing machine or water heater might have a drain pan collecting excess moisture, providing an excellent environment for mold growth. Furthermore, SERVPRO sees circumstances where appliances sit on wooden platforms, exposing those organic materials to saturation and then mold risks.

Installing hoses or piping that drains the water to the exterior from the pan is a reliable solution to these mold hazards. SERVPRO mold remediators then can contain and remove the colonies, finishing by applying topical antimicrobials. Without the standing water, recurrence is far less likely.

Similarly, areas where water is expected, need not be continual mold incubators if experienced technicians evaluate the need for additional safeguards. A bathtub or shower in a Hawaiian home can handle anticipated water from the faucet as well as unanticipated moisture from the slab foundation or crawl space below. Shower pans and moisture impervious cement backer board installations help contain shower and tub water inside suitably installed and caulked fixtures. They then drain appropriately into the waste system and out of a home. Where subflooring is subjected to rain runoff and groundwater moisture, an upgrade to the appropriately rated vapor barriers is critical. Although SERVPRO can remediate bathroom mold outbreaks time after time, a more in-depth search for the cause minimizes or eliminates the need.

Rely on SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie for your mold damage remediation and prevention needs. One call to (808) 235-5015 gives you access to the knowledge and solutions our team offers for the unique mold damage issues faced by residents of Hawaii.

Severe water damage to paint

Often times many think "Its just water" "We can clean it up ourselves" not realizing the effects of water damage.  After 72 hours of a water loss if the drying process has not began there's a chance of microbial growth which can then lead to mold.  As time progresses so does the category of the water.  Which can be much more expensive and tedious of a job to get done.  Water also can absorb into flooring, paint, belongings, and walls which may cause total losses and will need to be completely demolished and removed.  Some may belongings may be able to be salvaged but not all.

We do provide free inspections and estimates. Call us today (808)235-5015 we have a response team ready to go at all hours of the day!

Professional Restoration Is Essential After A Kailua Home Fire

2/26/2018 (Permalink)

Wave Aloha to Fire & Smoke Damage to Your Kailua Home with SERVPRO's Cleanup & Restoration

Trust the SERVPRO Team for Fire & Smoke Damage Cleanup and Restoration

Experiencing a fire in your Kailua home is frightening for you and your family. Once the firefighters complete their work and return your property to your control, it is natural to be confused about the proper steps to take to recover from the disaster. We provide homeowners trustworthy assistance in these situations, with the equipment and experienced crews needed to clean and restore your home post-fire.

Even if the fire damage seems minor, your Kailua home dramatically benefits from a professional assessment. Standard cleaning procedures often make the damage worse. Speed is critical as the residues from the combustion of various household materials start a progressive damage cycle within minutes of their creation and diffusion throughout your home. Our team of fire damage restoration specialists works fast using their extensive training and periodic updates on IICRC protocols.

The industry standards that guide SERVPRO crews ensure cleaning methods chosen and used are appropriate to the fire damage situation in your Hawaiian home. We evaluate the characteristics of the sooty residues and match techniques to what we confront. Loose, ashy remains respond well to HEPA filtered vacuuming and dry sponging. Stickier coatings require a spray and wipe approach, and those that have progressed to hardened, lacquer-like films can need solvents and abrasive cleanings.

Our crew inspects HVAC systems to make sure soot does not continue to circulate, cleaning ducts if indicated. SERVPRO treats the entire dwelling as soot and smoke moves throughout the space, fueled by heat and encouraged, ironically, by open windows and cross ventilation. If we fail to remove all evidence of the fire, structural damage progresses, and your belongings deteriorate. We work to clean, deodorize, and seal all spaces affected by soot and smoke.

SERVPRO experts can remove soot and smoke damage, and odors, from personal and household belongings. We sometimes complete this remediation on-site, including carpeting and furnishings. Other items have better outcomes when cleaned elsewhere. We arrange for dry cleaning and laundering of clothing, linens, and window coverings. A pack-out of affected goods allows our team to concentrate on a range of cleaning and odor eliminating strategies for these articles away from your dwelling, while other crew members complete the restoration and deodorization of your home.

Count on SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie to meet your needs when fire damages your Hawaiian home or seasonal dwelling. Call us at (808) 235-5015 immediately after you receive the all-clear so we can partner on a plan that restores your property to pre-fire condition.

The Lingering Effects of a Kitchen Fire in Your Kaneohe Restaurant

2/6/2018 (Permalink)

Fire and smoke damage in your restaurant can cause panic as to when you can re-open. Contact SERVPRO right away for remediation.

Team SERVPRO Arrives Quickly to Remediate a Fire at Your Business Location

Your Kaneohe restaurant rarely can prepare for the possibility of even a small fire. The lingering effects of a kitchen fire can affect the entire building, making it difficult for your doors to stay open. Since such a significant portion of the year is heavy laden with tourism and non-local traffic, even small portions of time without your doors open to the hungry public can be highly damaging to profits.

While you might not have had much (or any) structural concerns following the recent blaze, there are lingering symptoms that make it difficult for guests to enjoy their meal. With any aspect of commercial fire damage to your Kaneohe restaurant, our certified restoration specialists at SERVPRO can help you to set things right.

One of the primary concerns that linger after a recent fire is the smell. From either smoke damage or charring, this is a scent that assuredly overpowers the aroma of the cuisine you are cooking and takes away from a guest’s experience. Using sophisticated equipment such as foggers, our SERVPRO technicians neutralize noxious molecules with the dense (and odorless) chemical compound emitted by the foggers.

Smoke and soot damage can be another potential problem for the customers that you want to bring in. If this is all in the kitchen area, it poses a threat to the meals that you are preparing and should be dealt with right away. Utilizing scrubbers with filters on them, our professionals deeply clean surfaces affected by the recent fire. Depending on the severity of the present smoke and soot damage, this cleaning can be done with a wet solution or with a dry scrubber.

Restoring the damaged areas or equipment affected by the fire is another aspect of our process and one that should also get held in high regard towards re-opening your establishment to the public. The contents of your restaurant that became damaged by the flames can often get restored to their preloss conditions provided that our team gets to these items quickly.

There is no right time to have a small fire in your restaurant, but having SERVPRO restoration services can make the process a little easier to manage. If you are struggling with lingering symptoms of a recent fire, contact SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie. Our emergency response team is available 24/7 by calling (808) 235-5015.

Restoring Flood Damage To Your Kaneohe Home

1/23/2018 (Permalink)

Severe weather is not always the cause of flooding.

Restoring Flood Damage

Severe weather is not always the cause of flooding. As you well know, those who live in Kaneohe experience over 37 inches of rainfall on average every year. When you have instances where much of this rainfall is happening in short proximity, the ground is unable to keep up with absorbing the water, and this causes water levels to rise and flooding to occur all over the island. While many in the area have sufficiently waterproofed their home, and taken preventative measures against the possibility of this disaster affecting the inside of their homes, no plan is entirely full-proof.

Depending on the measures taken, and how long ago they got taken, your Kaneohe home could still be at risk for this natural disaster to impact your lower levels. Foundations that were improperly constructed or not adequately waterproofed with drain systems around the house are the most likely of culprits to experience degradation of their foundation over time. Once water has even the smallest access point, it is a short while before larger cracks can form from water flow through the block.

The problem is, most people are not aware of a dire situation until the damage has already happened. If you are currently staring at a flooded basement or lower level of your residence, professional restoration services can help to bring your home back to its original state. In fact, our slogan “Like it never even happened” is a testament to the thorough and detailed work that our technicians do to restore flood damages to your home.

The primary focus of our SERVPRO team is extraction and prevention of further damages. When we first arrive, the team locates the source of the flooding and seals off the cracks and holes to prevent water penetration altogether. Extraction begins around this same time, utilizing pump trucks from our fleet to efficiently pull all of the water from the area quickly. The drying process is the next step, which uses both dehumidification equipment and air movers to dry up the region. Once this gets completed, our technicians can assess any lingering damages or structural weaknesses attributed to the flooding incident.

Our focus is bringing your home back to the condition you recognize and helping to ease your mind and walk you through our restoration process through every phase. The SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie team is available 24/7 for any emergency restoration needs you might have. You can reach us at (808) 235-5015.

Mold Damage Minimization In Kaneohe

Humidity in Kaneohe Can Cause Mold Development -- Call SERVPRO for Remediation

SERVPRO Provides Tips and Remediation for Mold Infestations

The warm and humid climate in Kaneohe is very conducive to mold and mildew issues. Homeowners are likely to see or smell moldy areas frequently if they take a casual attitude toward the conditions prevalent in Hawaii that support the fungal growth. Mold remediation services are available from our trained technicians, but we also want to help our customers with some tips that are effective in preventing mold issues in your home.

Kaneohe enjoys a tropical climate, with near perfect conditions for mold damage. This tradeoff can feel inevitable, but there are some things an educated homeowner can do to limit mold growth and the damage that follows. Although our technicians hold certifications as Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT), our ultimate focus is on working with you to devise strategies that significantly reduce the risk of active mold colonization in your home.

A review of your HVAC system is a good place to start. Be sure that you change the air filters regularly, replacing them with high-quality options with the proper MERV ratings for your system and conditions. SERVPRO can have your ductwork inspected and cleaned when necessary. Check to make sure that vents covers are cleaned of dust often and not blocked or covered.

One thing you may miss is to limit the items stored near or in the closet or room where your AC is located. Too many items in the area increase the incidence of dust, moisture, and other debris or substances that may be pulled into the system. Clean and vacuum all areas regularly, using a HEPA filter to reduce mold spores.

Maintain an interior temperature of 72 to 80 degrees, using the AC if necessary on a regular basis. For air conditioners to reduce humidity, they must run long enough to condense the excess moisture in the air, so you may want to cool the temperature down further on a consistent basis. Exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom must be used every time a pot boils, or a shower is taken. Clothes dryers must vent to the outside, and lint filters and the ductwork should often be cleaned. Functioning mechanical fixtures helps to guard against excess moisture, keep the relative humidity RH level consistent.

Be vigilant about keeping floors, sinks, tubs, and counters dry between uses. Spills cleaned up immediately pose little risk of feeding mold. Small leaks in plumbing or caulking need immediate attention and repair as their adverse effects accumulate over time. A rain that blows in must be mopped up fast. On pleasant days open doors and windows to encourage air flow.

Partner with SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie to find ways to reduce your risk of mold and mildew development. Call us at (808) 235-5015 to remediate current mold damage and then access our knowledge to make decisions about home maintenance that avoid mold growth going forward.

Air Conditioning Water Damage To Your Kaneohe Home

Kaneohe Water in the Wrong Places Means SERVPRO is Needed for Clean Up

Secondary Damages Often Occur After Appliance Malfunctions, Gets Things Dried Out Fast, Call SERVPRO

Air conditioners are an everyday staple in nearly every Kaneohe home. While they can be a luxury that makes for some comfortable living, they are still appliances that are mechanized and inevitably bound to malfunction and fail. For window units in homes that don’t feature central air stations, these failures can leave substantial water on the floors and walls of the area.

There are numerous reasons why you want to seek professional assistance for the water damage to your Kaneohe residence. First of all, you probably do not have the tools and equipment to assess the full extent of the damage. You also do not likely possess the equipment or experience to extract and thoroughly dry your home following such an incident, which failing to do this can result in further damages and lingering structural concerns.

Our SERVPRO emergency response team act quickly to reach your home and begin the restoration process right away. With situations like pooling water, the faster the water can get extracted and the area dried, the less likely that lasting damages occur. The initial assessment of the damage first ensures that water is done leaking onto the floor and that the damaged unit is removed from the area to prevent further issues.

Extraction and drying follow this step. Our SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians then bring out sophisticated instruments like our infrared cameras to measure moisture and assess internal damages to the walls. The further scanning of the area ensures that all of the areas get wholly dried and that the moisture and heat inside of the walls of your home do not combine to produce mold colonies.

Ultimately, our job is not completed until the homeowner can be shown that all of the water has been removed and the damage that it caused has been successfully restored. As this is part of our commitment to customer satisfaction, SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie should be the team you think of when you are facing your own water emergencies. You can reach our emergency response team at any time by calling (808) 235-5015.

Restoring and Protecting Your Home Through Remediation of Mold Damage in Kaneohe

12/24/2017 (Permalink)

Homeowners are often devastated and overwhelmed when they find mold in their home. Contacting SERVPRO gets you a trained technician ready to help.

Certified SERVPRO Technicians Remediate a Current Mold Infestation While Offering Tips to Prevent a Recurrence

It is never pleasant to find microbial growth taking place in your Kaneohe residence. Mold and mildew should warn you of the presence of unwanted moisture in your home. This moisture permits ever-present microbes to proliferate rapidly.

It is possible for houses in Kaneohe with mold damage to suffer in other ways. Water damage to both materials and personal belongings and an uncomfortable indoor environment can both happen when moisture rises too high. SERVPRO can help restore the areas damaged by mold, prevent other damage from happening, and restore humidity to more comfortable levels in your home.

Our technicians, certified in Applied Microbial Remediation (AMRT) by the IICRC, are ready to perform the work required to make your home “Like it never even happened.” Mold can appear anywhere in your home that contains too much moisture. We ensure that we remedy this problem first so that mold cannot grow in the future. Using 0.6 mil thick plastic, we completely enclose the area in question.

We want to ensure that microbes cannot migrate within your home, so we install at least one air scrubber. Forcing the air out through the plastic tubing faster than it can seep in through any minuscule cracks produces negative air pressure in the room. Negative pressure prevents any dust, spores, or other microscopic particles from entering other parts of your home. Hospitals use this technique because it effectively contains highly contagious diseases and prevents their spread.

As we remove all of the mold-affected materials from your home, we double bag these inside plastic bags. Bagging the materials in this manner makes it safe for us to dispose these items at the curb. Vacuums with HEPA filters efficiently remove fragments and dust from the area. Elimination of damaged materials like drywall, fiberboard, and paneling and dust leaves the area ready for a wipe down with a liquid biocide.

SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie assists local homeowners to efficiently combat mold damage in their properties, no matter the size. We want your family to live in a safe and healthy environment, so our services and phone are always available, every day of the year. Contact us at (808) 235-5015 so we can help protect your home from microbial growth and the harm it can cause.

Kailua Homeowners Often in Path of Flooding

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

When rain brings floodwaters into your home, it is time to contact SERVPRO for drying out and remediation services. Call quickly for best results.

SERVPRO Certified Technicians and Project Managers Aim to Dry Out Your Property Quickly to Help Prevent a Mold Infestation

Rainfall totals in the Kailua area are over 50 inches per year, similar to other areas of Hawaii, but well above the nationwide average of 39 inches. Two out of three days show some precipitation, and there is always the possibility of significant rainfall on any given day. The surrounding mountains collect and send water our way as well, all factors contributing to a constant threat of flooding. Our business is to help if our watery climate or infrastructure imperils your property with flood damage.

Terracing of neighboring yards and drainage canals from nearby highways and streets augment the effect of heavy rainfall on your home, causing flood damage in Kailua. Poor maintenance on the part of others, allowing debris to build up and block the intended flow of rainwater runoff, has the unintended consequence of filling your lower levels with water, silt, and other residue. Assisting your recovery from this disaster is one of our core services.

Water is a powerful destructive force, not only soaking your home’s building materials and contents, but also threatening the integrity of its foundation and structure. SERVPRO is well aware of the devastation flooding brings to a home, particularly when the water comes fast and contains dirt, rocks, and other items collected as it surges. When we arrive at your home, our experienced managers check first for safety concerns, including structural stability and the threat of electric shock or breached oil or gas lines.

Then our highly-trained crews dig in to remove water, mud, and other residues. If your power is out, our truck-mounted pumps and extractors operate off our generators, avoiding any delay in getting the restoration work started. We have equipment resources that permit us to remove significant accumulations of silt and debris as well as the flood waters. Flood waters are almost always contaminated with chemicals, animal waste, and, potentially, with human waste. The advanced courses SERVPRO’s crew members master concerning gray and black water containment, removal, and disposal support our efforts to get your home back to a clean and sanitary condition.

Drying of the structure and contents is the next step. Air movers and dehumidifiers pull moisture out. If you have quantities of soaked personal belongings, the SERVPRO team inventories, moves, and stages them in a dry area where informed decisions can be made for their restoration or disposal. We offer state of the art document drying off-site, and recommend recovery strategies for furnishings, clothing, and other household items.

SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie is always ready to meet your flood damage needs. Help is a just a call away. The line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (808) 235-5015.

Defending Your Kailua Home from Fire Damages

11/7/2017 (Permalink)

Enjoy the Beach While SERVPRO Cleans Up Your Kailua Home

Prevention Is a Wise Proactive Effort for Potential Fire Damage to Your Kailua Property

Your home is an essential possession in your life. It is the one place that your family universally treasures, and a place where so many of your favorite memories are made. Unfortunately, structure fires and smaller damaging blazes can upend your cherished homestead very quickly. It is best to keep an active defense against potential fires, and if you do, fire damages to your Kailua home might not end up being so severe.

So, how do you prepare for fire damages to your Kailua home? You start by giving yourself the tools to put out fires as they may occur, long before we here at SERVPRO ever have to get involved. All across the Islands, many homes are ill-prepared for an unexpected fire. There are no precautionary items (fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, or sprinkler systems) in place to help quell a fire just as it begins.

While it is not uncommon for homes to have smoke detectors, you should regularly check these devices to ensure that they are working correctly. Not only is this going to give you an opportunity to escape your home safely should the fire be too much to attempt to snuff out on your own, but it might also give you a quick jump on the problem to put the fire out with an extinguisher.

Areas that Are More Susceptible to Water Damage in a Typical Kahaluu Home

11/1/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Inspects Hot Spots for Water Leakage to Help Prevent Water Damaging Events

Water damage in a typical Kahaluu home does not affect all the areas equally. Some areas are more susceptible to this risk than others. With this being the case, it is important for every homeowner in the area to be familiar with some of the potentially hardest hit areas. It is only in this way that appropriate mitigation strategies can be adopted.

The years and years of SERVPRO’s operation in the field of combating water damage in Kahaluu makes it qualified to offer homeowners information on this issue. Our accumulated work experience and acquired expertise make us a viable partner to restore water damaged homes. For a start, areas beneath the sinks are perhaps the most vulnerable. This is for the sheer reason that sinks handle the lion’s share of all the water that flows in a typical home. Negligence is also a key factor. This is mainly because users of kitchen faucets have time and again failed to close them tightly after use. Bathrooms come in second, as SERVPRO has consistently noted. These two facilities handle quite a large quantity of water, second only to the sinks and kitchens.

They also contain pipes, faucets, and drainage channels that are prone to leaks and damages. Areas underneath water heaters and roof gutters are the third worst affected. SERVPRO technicians often restore these water damaged areas during a service. When unable to contain the excess water, damage is the result. In times of excess precipitation, the basements are often badly hit. Their location below the ground level greatly hampers their drainage.

As such, they can flood or contain excess levels of moisture. They also suffer other negative consequences of excess accumulation of water. Identifying hot spots can help prevent, mitigate, and reduce costs and efforts for water damage restoration. Rely on SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie to restore your property to its preloss condition. Call us 24/7 at (808) 235-5015 for a prompt response.

When Commercial Fire Damage Keeps Your Entertainment Venue Closed

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

If a fire spreads and causes damage to your venue during a luau, call SERVPRO to remediate the damage quickly.

Rely on SERVPRO for Immediate Fire Damage Restoration Services

Many times, luaus in Kaneohe make use of fire or burning torches. Rarely do accidents ever occur. However, when they do, fire damage can happen rapidly. This can leave guests upset, but an immediate response from management can significantly help calm fears. This response also needs to include mitigation of any areas affected.

Kaneohe hotels and other venues that offer entertainment to guests and the public at large can mitigate fire damage more easily with the help of a professional team. SERVPRO can assist you every step of the way whenever there is damage from small or large blazes. We quickly clean up the soot and oils involved in the fiery displays and remove any damaged materials.

Our professionals can help repair any stages that sustained fire damage from the fire along with areas behind the stage. Restoring fabric backdrops and other props with laundering or hand cleaning can often suffice. Other times, we need to pack these items up for more thorough cleaning at our facility. We return these as soon as possible in like-new condition.

Soot can cling to everything, and oil-based fire produces some of the worst types of soot. However, we have the techniques and tools needed to complete even the messiest jobs. Brushes and cloths remove soot before it can dull surfaces of metals and glossy plastics. Cleansers help us do much of the work by loosening the soot from the items' surfaces.

Unfortunately, not all items can be cleaned or laundered sufficiently. Some items become destroyed by even the smallest fire because of their materials or their fragility. SERVPRO can help with inventory lists of all disposed of items, also, so you can more easily replace the exact items lost. However, restoring items instead of replacing them is often much more cost-effective.

The highly trained professionals at SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie enjoy luaus and know that they remain a vital part of our culture and our economy. We want you to reach out to us at our local number, (808) 235-5015, whenever fire damage might keep you from holding your next show.

Why You Need Mold Damage Remediation Before Selling Your Hauula Home

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO, we say no to mold infestations and say yes to mold remediation.

Learn Why Professional Mold Remediation is Key in Hauula Homes

Are you thinking of selling your home in Hauula? If you are ready to sell up, you probably have a very long list of things you need to do. Before a house sale, there is so much to do, including finding an estate agent, getting your home neat and tidy for potential buyers, putting it on the market, showing interested parties around and, of course, finding your new dream home. Hauula mold damage is probably the last thing on your mind.

However, SERVPRO recommends checking for signs of mold damage and getting fungal remediation before you try and sell your home in Hauula. Interested buyers will order a home inspection before negotiating a deal with you, and some savvy buyers these days even order a specific mold inspection.

Finding fungus in a possible new home is a quick way to turn buyers off. Mold devalues your home and makes it look unkempt and uncared-for. Visible mold is also a clear tell-tale sign of damp, and nobody wants to move into a home that has obvious damp and mold problems.

Before you sell your house, carry out a thorough examination for mold. Look in all the hidden, damp corners where the fungus loves to grow, and look for signs of colonies such as black, green or brown patches.

SERVPRO’s mold remediation experts are on hand to help you deal with any issues you discover. We start by establishing containment so spores cannot travel to other areas of your home, and we use negative air machines to vent contaminated air to the outside.

Next, we clean all signs of the visible mold, so your home looks fresh and bright. Finally, we use dehumidifiers to lower the humidity and discourage fungal regrowth.

Because damp is vital for mold proliferation, we recommend you deal with any damp areas before putting your home on the market. If you discover leaks, broken roof tiles, or damage pipes or appliances, get them fixed as soon as possible. Consider buying dehumidifiers to keep humidity down and hold mold at bay.

Create A Disaster Kit In Case Of Flood Damage In Hauula

Water on the Beach in Hauula, No Flooding in Your Home

SERVPRO Tips to Mitigate Flooding Harm

It is not always easy to predict flooding. However, advanced weather tracking makes it easier these days and weather channels frequently predict flood damage from storms and hurricanes. Preparedness is important – by the time the inclement weather occurs, it is often too late to prepare or make any emergency arrangements. SERVPRO recommends residents of Hauula build a disaster kit in advance, so they are ready when the waters rise.

Everyone hopes that it is possible to be safe at home when flood damage occurs in Hauula. However, it is not always possible to predict damage to your house, or how local services and amenities might be affected by torrents of water. Because flooding is unpredictable and might cause problems with everything from food and water supplies to power outages or lack of access to medical care, it is a good idea to plan as much as you can.

Your kit needs plenty of purified or bottled water, and nonperishable food. Canned food is by far the safest choice after flooding as it is not susceptible to waterborne diseases. Stockpile bottled water, but keep water purification tablets on hand in case your supply runs out.

A first aid kit is a must for post-flood situations. Make sure you have sanitary wipes, anti-bacterial creams, soap, disinfectant, bandages and dressings, anti-diarrhea medication, and a three-day supply of any medicines that you take.

Staying warm is sometimes difficult after a flood. Your emergency supplies should include several changes of clean, warm clothing, and blankets. Add in waterproof gear and gloves so you can navigate waters if you must.

The power sometimes fails after flooding. Buy a supply of flashlights and batteries, or even better invest in wind-up flashlights that do not require a battery. Wind up radio connects you to the outside and makes it easier to listen for news and official announcements.

After the worst is over and you can return home, SERVPRO is on hand to help with flood cleanup. We extract water from your property and set to work salvaging as much as possible, and drying the structure of your home. We also deodorize your house.

For help with flood cleanup in Kokokahi, Kahuku, Kahaluu, Kaneohe and surrounding areas, call SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie at (808) 235-5015 today.

Which Fire Extinguisher Is Best to Prevent Fire Damage in Kaneohe Homes?

9/18/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO recommends keeping more than one type of fire extinguisher in your home to stop house fires.

A Look at Fire Extinguishers for Your Home

Keeping a fire extinguisher at home is a sensible precaution for all Kaneohe householders, which might prevent a fire from getting out of control. Fire damage is a risk for any household, and although it is necessary to be very careful with fire, taking precautionary steps such as having an extinguisher in the house can make a difference to how much fire damage occurs in the event of a blaze.

Which fire extinguisher is best to prevent fire damage to your Kaneohe home? SERVPRO understands that the range of fire extinguishers on the market can be confusing. There is no “one size fits all” fire extinguisher – each model is unique to a particular type of fire. Let us take a look at the various fire extinguishers available for your home.

Dry powder is one of the most broad-spectrum extinguisher products, as it can be used on flammable liquid or gas, wood, cloth, and electrical fires. However, dry powder is not suitable for grease fires in the kitchen. Dry powder extinguishers are best for living rooms and dens.

Wet chemical extinguishers are suitable for use on kitchen grease fires, but they are not safe to use on electrical fires, or flammable gas or liquids. Wet chemical extinguishers are useful in the kitchen.

CO2 extinguishers work on flammable liquids or electrical fires, but cannot be used on soft materials such as drapes or sofas, and are also not suitable for fighting cooking fat fires. CO2 extinguishers are handy to have in an office or where there are power tools and flammable liquid, such as in the garage.

Foam extinguishers are suitable for wood, flammable liquids, and spirits, but are not effective against kitchen or electrical blazes. Foam extinguishers are most useful in the garage or workshop.

Fire blankets are useful for extinguishing small fires before they get out of control, and are particularly useful for swift control of a small kitchen fire.

SERVPRO recommends having more than one type of fire extinguisher in the home. It is not possible to stop every home fire. In circumstances where fire damage occurs, our IICRC-certified technicians are on hand to clean up smoke and soot residue, restore your home, and carry out deodorization, so it feels “Like it never even happened.”

How To Create A Fire Damage Prevention Plan For Your Kailua Office

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

Emergency READY Profile Plan ERP Helps Protect Your Kailua Business

A SERVPRO Consultation and the Mobile ERP App Keeps You Prepared

Fire damage is a real risk for any office building. Whether your office is a government agency, insurance company, bookseller, accountancy firm or anything else, fire safety awareness is important. The ferocious wildfire in Mokuleia earlier this year served as a reminder of the power and destructiveness of fire. SERVPRO recommends that every business in Kailua puts a fire prevention plan in place.

A fire damage prevention plan means that you think ahead and take steps to prevent a blaze in your Kailua office. Having a plan in place also means that should the worst happen and a fire breaks out, your staff knows what to do.

Here are some vital points your plan must cover.

Evacuation routes and assembly points. Do not forget to allow for employees with disabilities or mobility problems.

Emergency contacts and lists of actions to take. Post these around the office so everyone can see them.

Preventative measures to help stop fire damage from happening in the first place. These might include regular wiring checks, careful storage of flammable materials, and unplugging appliances when not in use.

Regular checks on fire alarms and sprinklers to be sure they are ready should disaster strike.

The importance of keeping fire lanes and escape routes clear, and fire doors shut. Make sure all your employees know this basic information.

The location and use of fire extinguishers. Make sure your employees know where to find fire extinguishers or blankets, and how and when to use them safely.

When your fire damage prevention plan is in place, distribute it to all employees. Hold a meeting and some training to get them up to speed and make sure they have all the knowledge they need.

Remember to add SERVPRO’s phone number to your list of emergency contacts. In the event of a fire, our IICRC-certified technicians are on hand to provide a professional and thorough cleanup. We carry out every step from initial assessment to post-cleaning odor removal, so your office is ready for use as soon as possible.

We also have a handy app that makes creating your fire damage prevention plan much easier. The SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan app helps you assess your office and provides you with an accessible profile document and a guide for helping you get back into business after a fire.

An Emergency READY Profile Plan also establishes the chain of command for authorizing fire restoration and ensures your local SERVPRO franchise is your local emergency contact for fire cleanup. You can get started today by visiting SERVPRO.com/ready.

Storm Surge Flood Damage to Kaneohe During Tropical Systems

9/10/2017 (Permalink)

Flooding after a storm can overwhelm your entire area. Contact SERVPRO to help remediate the damage after a flood.

SERVPRO Trucks and Technicians are Ready to Remediate Your Flooded Property

The storm surge created by a tropical storm combines with pounding waves to flood dwellings in Kaneohe. A storm surge raises the ocean’s level beyond that expected by normal tides due to changes in atmospheric pressure and high winds. Professional flood damage restoration post-storm is highly recommended to transform the devastation caused by these natural forces back to preloss condition.

During the period from midsummer through December, residents prepare for the possibility of flood damage in Kaneohe due to severe storms and even hurricane activity. High winds, torrential rains, and storm surge cause rain and salt water to flood into the crawl spaces and lower levels of homes. We count as our core mission helping our community recover from the effects of these violent storms, using highly trained water removal and damage remediation technicians and powerful, professional grade restoration equipment.

SERVPRO poises for a speedy response when flood damage threatens your home. Immediately after your first call to our office staff, we schedule an appointment to assess the damage to your premises and to devise an appropriate plan to remove the flood waters and dry out your house and possessions. Have no fear that power outages affect our ability to start on your job. We feature truck mounted pumps and extractors to begin removing standing water as soon as our experienced project managers give the signal.

After the majority of water exits your property via our efficient equipment, SERVPRO technicians begin measuring moisture content and establishing drying goals specifically for your structure and its contents. High-efficiency air movers and dehumidifiers rapidly reduce the moisture content of walls, floors, ceilings, and other structural components. Periodically our workers reassess the moisture levels to ensure drying is progressing as expected. Building materials that deteriorated because of the saturation or the force of the flooding are removed and replaced, but our focus is on restoration over demolition as far as is practical.

We work with your insurance carrier throughout the restoration process, including advocating for specialized freeze drying treatments if you have documents or pictures damaged by the water. We also provide payment plans for self pay customers.  SERVPRO follows a precise inventory protocol if we move boxes, clothing, and other items from the flood damaged areas of your home. Typically we find a protected area within your property to store your belongings as we help you review what contents can be restored and what may need to be discarded.

SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie has the tools and the personnel to assist when storm activity results in flood damage. Call us at (808) 235-5015 as soon as possible so we can get started on a successful restoration plan and process.

Your Mold Damage Partner in Kailua

8/27/2017 (Permalink)

Laundry issues such as a leak or a clogged dryer vent can contribute to mold damage in your home. Call SERVPRO to investigate the damage today.

SERVPRO Technicians Remediate Mold Damage in Your Home and Help Prevent a Recurrence

Hawaii has a climate that features daily rains and high humidity in most areas, and our community is no exception. The amount of moisture possible in your home can be significant at any given time, meaning you need to be vigilant and check for microbial growth. Our teams of fully trained mold remediation specialists are always available if the microbes seem to have the upper hand.

You have all the safeguards in place to limit mold damage in your Kailua home. Your bathrooms have operating exhaust fans tripped by the rooms’ light switches. The kitchen also features, and you use, a properly sized and vented hood fan over your cooking area. Air conditioning runs as recommended to not only cool the air but also to remove as much moisture as possible. The drains and condenser coils are clean. If despite all, your efforts fail and you notice mold growth in your laundry room, we can help abate the current mold outbreak and assist you in troubleshooting the reason for the mold damage.

SERVPRO mold remediation follows the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) protocol. First, we contain the mold, including using negative pressure air scrubbers while we work, venting potentially contaminated air outside. Then we remove the mold colony and any porous materials it infiltrates, and dispose of it according to hazardous waste rules. We finish the cleanup by using professional antimicrobials to destroy this outbreak.

The last, but arguably most important, step our technicians take is to find the moisture that fueled this most recent mold problem. The average air humidity in Kailua is always over 60 percent, edging into “danger zone” that encourages mold spores to blossom into colonies. You plan for this with indoor technology that reduces ambient moisture in your home to between 30 and 50 percent. Since you take this care, the mold that does grow is likely feeding off another moisture source. SERVPRO crew members seek and discover unexpected sources of moisture you overlook to get things back into balance.

SERVPRO’s inspection reveals a clogged clothes dryer vent, incompletely sending damp air outside of the home when the dryer operates. That moist air supported mold growth. We clean out the vent and recommend consistent removal of lint from the dryer’s filter as another way to reduce moisture in the laundry room. This practical response combined with your other best practices gives your home the best chance to remain mold-free into the future.

Mold damage restoration is a specialty of SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie. Call us at (808) 235-5015 to discuss this common problem in our humid climate. We have solutions to keep the mold under control.

What to Do When a Small Appliance Results in Fire Damage to Your Kailua Bathroom

8/21/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage to Your Kailua Paradise? Call SERVPRO

SERVPRO Cleanup and Restoration Post Fire & Smoke Events

Localized fires in Kailua can be caused by any sized appliance and can occur in any room in your home. Small appliances that receive daily use easily become fire-starters simply because of the normal wear and tear they suffer.

Residents who go about their daily routines in the morning expect things to be the same when they return home as when they left in the morning, but Kailua fire damage can change that quickly. Heating elements from dryers and other hair appliances are not the sole reasons behind bathroom fires. Any appliance can develop a frayed cord. When they do, these bathroom items can become deadly shock-hazards. Sparking and subsequent ignition of nearby materials when a cord remains plugged in, even with the switch turned to the 'off' position, is another possibility that can leave any family devastated.

Prevention is said to be easier than repairing and restoring fire damage, but even the most diligent people still experience this kind of catastrophe. Knowing that SERVPRO has the technicians with proper training, certification, and experience in all sizes of restoration gives you the reassurance needed when disaster strikes you and your family. When a fire happens in a small room, the blaze might remain there, but this occurs in few cases. In most situations, fire spreads quickly, especially when the home is unoccupied. Regardless of how large, or small, a fire is, smoke spreads into every open area in a home, leaving behind a horrible scent that can last indefinitely.

We are skilled in all phases of fire damage restoration, including extracting all water and other fire extinguishing foams, ensuring the safety of your home's structure. Removal, and restoration of all burnt materials, refinishing and repainting of walls and ceilings, deodorization, and much more come with our services. When we finish, your family can return to a home that looks and feels “Like it never even happened.”

We recognize that your house or bungalow is of vital importance to your family, and we work hard each time to ensure we work both quickly and thoroughly to restore your property to livable standards. Our customer's questions are given timely and correct answers because we know that this is already a stressful time for any family. We want to relieve as much of the stress accompanying the other major inconveniences created by fire damage.

Call us, SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie, at (808) 235-5015, whenever you have fire damage or any other situation that prevents you from enjoying your home in Kailua, Kaneohe, or Laie.

Professional Response Solves Kailua Water Damage Problems

Keep the Water Where It Belongs, Not in Your Kailua Bungalow--Call SERVPRO

Water Leaks? Prevent Damage by Calling SERVPRO in the Kailua Area

A modern kitchen makes water work in many ways. Clean dishes and quantities of ice keep your household going strong, water lines snaking under cabinets to make these things happen. Leaking in one or more of these lines saturates your kitchen fixtures, causing water damage in your Kailua home. You notice an uptick in your water bill and occasional puddles on the floor. Looking under the sink or you see a damp cabinet bottom. Mopping it up does not cure the problem. Contacting a professional is the wise thing to do. We find the source and make sure to abate both leak and damage.

When SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians arrive, expect questions about where you notice water or dampness. We take it from there, using moisture measuring devices to give us a baseline from which we determined drying goals. A technician may remove the kick plates between the bottom of your cabinets and the floor to check for obvious leaks and any standing water contained underneath. Our crew locates the leak and arranges for repair and then gets to work on the damage done by the water.

Slow leaks can equal major damage as wood swells and weakens. We evaluate the condition of your cabinets to see if drying alone is an option or if some pieces of wood need to be removed and replaced. The floor under the cabinets also receives an inspection, including the subflooring. Tile floor handles water well unless there are cracks in the joints or grout. An examination of the subfloor may be necessary, viewed from a lower level or crawlspace.

If your suspicion that a water leak exists somewhere in your kitchen needs confirmation give us a call at (808) 235-5015. An experienced water damage crew from SERVPRO of Kailua North / Laie makes certain the leak is found and fixed and the damage restored to preserve your home and your investment.
